A constantly running toilet may seem like a small annoyance, but it can waste hundreds of litres of water each day, increase your utility bill, and sometimes point to worn plumbing components that should be replaced before they fail completely.

The good news? In many cases, the repair is straightforward when addressed early.

Common Signs Your Toilet Needs Repair

If you've noticed any of the following, your toilet may need attention:

  • The toilet continues running long after flushing.

  • You hear water constantly flowing into the bowl.

  • The tank frequently refills on its own.

  • The toilet makes unusual humming or hissing noises.

  • Your water bill has unexpectedly increased.

These symptoms are often caused by worn internal components such as the fill valve or flapper valve.

What Causes a Running Toilet?

Inside every toilet tank are several components that work together during each flush.

Over time, these parts naturally wear out.

Two of the most common culprits are:

Fill Valve

  • The fill valve controls the water entering the tank after each flush.

  • When it begins to fail, it may continue allowing water into the tank or make loud filling noises.

Flapper Valve

  • The rubber flapper creates a watertight seal inside the tank.

  • As it ages, it can warp or deteriorate, allowing water to slowly leak into the bowl. The fill valve then continually refills the tank, creating an endless cycle.

Why You Should Repair It Early

Many homeowners ignore a running toilet because it still "works."

Unfortunately, it may be wasting a surprising amount of water every day.

Repairing the problem early can help:

  1. Reduce unnecessary water consumption

  2. Lower utility costs

  3. Prevent premature wear on other plumbing components

  4. Restore quiet, reliable operation
