Water under your kitchen sink may look like a straightforward leaking kitchen sink P-trap, but replacing the trap alone will not always solve the problem. A leak can originate higher in the drain assembly, especially where the basket strainer, tailpiece and P-trap connect.
On a completed HANDLD repair, the kitchen sink had an active drain leak and the P-trap was leaking. During the repair, heavily corroded basket strainer threads were found fused to the tailpiece. The basket strainer and tailpiece were replaced along with the leaking P-trap so the drain components could be properly sealed and aligned. The completed assembly was then leak-tested.
Why a Kitchen Sink P-Trap Leaks
A P-trap holds a small amount of water to prevent sewer gases from travelling back through the drain. Its connections also need to remain watertight whenever the sink drains.
Common causes of a trap leak include worn or poorly seated slip-joint washers, misaligned tubing, cross-threaded nuts and corrosion. The important point is that the visible drip is not necessarily where the underlying problem begins. Water from a basket strainer or tailpiece connection can travel down the drain assembly and appear around the trap.
That is why identifying the actual source matters before replacing parts.
When the Basket Strainer and Tailpiece Are Part of the Problem
The basket strainer is the drain fitting installed in the bottom of the sink. The tailpiece connects below it and carries water toward the P-trap. If these components are damaged, simply installing a new trap may leave an unreliable connection.

How to Find an Under-Sink Leak
If you notice water in the cabinet, start by drying the plumbing and cabinet base. Place a tray underneath to catch further drips while investigating.
Run the faucet for two to three minutes and use a dry paper towel to check around the P-trap slip nuts, tailpiece connections and the underside of the basket strainer. A paper towel can reveal a small amount of moisture before a drip becomes obvious.
Another useful test is to fill the sink, install the stopper, then release the water while observing every drain connection. This puts more water through the assembly at once. The joints should remain dry throughout the test.
Avoid repeatedly tightening a leaking slip nut. Excessive tightening can damage a nut or deform a washer. If the connection will not seal with proper alignment and reasonable tightening, worn, corroded or damaged components may need replacement.
Why Drain Alignment Matters
Tubular drain components should meet without being forced into position. When a tailpiece and P-trap are pulled sideways or held under tension to make them connect, the washers may not seat evenly. That can contribute to recurring leaks.
A proper repair therefore involves more than stopping the immediate drip. The condition of the connected parts, their washers and threads, and the alignment of the drain assembly all matter to the final seal.

Brass vs. PVC P-Traps
Both brass and PVC tubular drain components are used for kitchen sink drainage. Brass has a traditional appearance and handles heat well, but it can corrode over time. PVC does not corrode and is another common option.
The better choice depends on the existing installation and how the components need to connect. Kitchen sink drains are commonly 1-1/2 inches, but homeowners should verify their actual drain size rather than assume it. Correct sizing, washer placement and stress-free alignment are more important than choosing a material based on appearance alone.
When installing a new basket strainer, the sealing product should also follow the sink or strainer manufacturer's requirements. Plumber's putty is commonly used in suitable applications, while some manufacturers or sink materials call for silicone. New compatible gaskets and washers should be installed as required by the drain components.
Protecting the Cabinet After a Kitchen Sink Drain Leak
Even a relatively small drain leak can repeatedly wet the cabinet base. Once a leak is noticed, use a tray or container to catch water and thoroughly dry the affected cabinet area.
After a repair, checking again for moisture can help identify a slow drip that was not obvious during the initial test. As general maintenance guidance, recheck the connections after about 24 hours and again roughly a week later.
If threads are seized, a nut has cracked, corrosion is extensive, or the drain cannot be aligned without force, professional repair can reduce the risk of damaging additional components. A sink with a dishwasher or disposal connection can also have additional joints that need to be inspected when tracing the source of a leak.
