A Toronto Basement Laundry Upgrade: The Completed Project

For this completed HANDLD job, an older basement laundry corner had exposed brick and painted surfaces, visible utilities and two small wire shelves that were not making effective use of the available wall area. The nearby vinyl basement window also had a rough unfinished surround with exposed foam and plywood.

HANDLD removed the small wire shelves and installed wood strapping on two walls. Pre-painted white pegboard panels were then measured, cut and mounted over the strapping. The panels were fitted around existing plumbing, an electrical outlet and ducting rather than interfering with those services.

A window extension was also cut and fitted around the vinyl window opening. This covered the rough opening and provided a cleaner finished edge.

The result was a brighter-looking laundry zone with a broad, usable surface ready for hooks, baskets and other compatible organizers. Just as importantly, the project worked with the constraints of an older basement instead of requiring the walls to be completely rebuilt.

Choosing Pegboard for a Basement Laundry Room

Basement conditions should influence the material you choose. Pre-painted pegboard offers a clean appearance and can be a cost-effective option, while metal and moisture-resistant composite systems may be preferable where dampness is a recurring concern.

Replacement basement windows can sometimes leave spray foam, plywood or other parts of the rough opening visible from inside. An extension jamb is a relatively simple way to bridge the space between the window frame and the surrounding finished surface.

In this project, fitting a window extension helped clean up the appearance of the vinyl window opening alongside the new pegboard. Additional trim or casing can be considered depending on the desired finish.
